We are the grassroots group that represents the students at the Faculty of Mathematics of the University of Vienna. What does that mean?

The best way to contact us is to send a mail to stv.mathematik@oeh.univie.ac.at. During the building opening hours you can usually find us in the Vektor-Raum (1.136) especially during the Plenum, but if you have specific concerns, it is best to visit our counselling hours. At the listed times someone is sure to be in the office (1.135) to help you. During counselling hours you can also call us, our phone number is 01-4277-19660 .
Counselling hours:
Our counselling hours (also called Journaldienst, JD for short) are an offer for students who have any questions about studying or student life. Every semester, there are certain times during which one of us is in the office and available to advise in person (in our office (also called JD)), per email (stv.mathematik@oeh.univie.ac.at) or on the phone (01-4277-19660).
Counselling hours in the summer
During the lecture-free period in the summer, there are no fixed counselling hours. Our email gets checked periodically to help with questions and problems! If it is really needed, a personal meeting can be scheduled.
For orientation, you can see the Areas of Competency/Focus for each counsellor. Of course, you can come to any of the counselling times with any of your questions!

Vertretungsarbeit
What do we actually do?
We, the Roter Vektor Mathematik, are a group of students that contains the students and faculty representation. We take care of all the legal tasks of these two bodies and a little more:
- Student counseling
- Vektorraum, books, and games
- Erstitute: Organization of the Erstitute.
- Parties, get-togethers, events
- StuKo, FaKo, CurrAg, TenureTrack: Faculty committees that we are also a part of.
- Social and political topics as well as funding and advertising projects
How we work
We are a grassroots democratic group, which means that everyone can have a say in how we operate and what happensâincluding you! To this end, we hold weekly public meetings, our plena. You can find the next plenary session date in our calendar

Maybe our least structured, but perhaps most important task is advising other students. We have certain consultation times for this, but you can also just drop by the Vektorraum outside of these times, because there are always people there who are willing to help you.

Since we just mentioned it, we also have a space at Oskar-Morgenstern-Platz. There, you will not only find our people at almost any time, but also math books, games, and simply a place to take a break from studying and talk to other students.

We were all new and confused once. Erstitute is a way for us to make it easier for first-year students to get started with their studies. Erstitute are weekly social gatherings organized by a group of upperclassmen. In principle, anyone can hold an Erstitut, even if this requires attending a seminar.
Parties, get-togethers, events
Studying isnât just about worksheets and exams! Thatâs why we regularly organize parties, get-togethers for students, and general events. Of course, we need lots of motivated people and helping hands to do this. We also support others with cool events (financially and/or organizationally), so if youâre interested in organizing your own event, you can find more information on our info page about events supported by Roter Vektor.

Of course, we also fulfill the legal obligations of a student and faculty representative body, and that means one thing above all else: committee work. Through StuKo and FaKo, we advise the study program management and faculty/deanâs office, among others. In CurrAGs, we participate in changes to (or the creation of) curricula. In TenureTracks, habilitations, and appointment procedures, we represent the interests of students in the appointment of professors.
Social, political, funding, and applications
Studying is not the same for everyone, because not everyone has the opportunity to study at all. As a group representing students, we see it as our special responsibility to combat local structural, financial, and class-based barriers on the one hand, and to continue to advocate politically for equality and plurality in society on the other. We promote and/or support projects in need that correspond to our principles. You can find the projects we promote regularly on our Instagram and in our newsletter.
